East Falls Glassworks ran our August Open House a bit differently.
Our new gloryholes are portable, so we decided to try running one of them
in the outside alleyway, next to the shop. Blowing glass outside was a
new experience for most of us and was lots of fun. There was a summer
breeze to contend with and the lighting outdoors is a bit different than
the shop overhead lights.
All the glassblowers were able to adapt and everyone seemed to have a great
time working outside. Running inside for gathers and bits was a bit troublesome
but all-in-all it was a huge success. Sitting at the bench outside was a nice
diversion from the summer heat in the 'hot' shop.
Indoor and Outdoor Demonstrations
We had smaller scale demonstrations outside and more involved demonstrations inside
for the duration of the open house. Observers were able to sit down and watch
either show. We will be making this a part of our regular Open Houses. As long
as the weather is cooperative, look for us outside!
Thanks to all the visiting artists who participated. The observers really enjoyed
the demonstrations and a few of our guests decided they would like to try glassblowing
for themselves. It is really exciting to see the already vibrant Philadelphia glass
community growing with each event and each passing month.
Wide Variety of Glass Techniques
A great aspect of the Community Day/Open House format is that each artist brings
their own glass blowing techniques and style to the event. The August event was no
exception. The demonstrations ranged from Venetian-style goblet work to solid
sculptural work, to cane pulling, to murrine pickups off the pastorelli. The diversity
of the Philadelphia glass community was in full effect.
