Big Opportunity for Small Local Business
"It all happened so fast. We received a call from the design team on Friday, went to the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition house on Saturday, started prototyping Saturday night, and then into Sunday. The show sent a video crew to our studio on Monday to record us making some of the work. On Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning we were back at the house for the installation. It was a real whirlwind of activity." Goldberg said.
Pach continued: "The design concept for the work is amazing; the show's designers have done an excellent job of integrating our art (glassblowing) into the theme of the room. We can't wait to see the finished product; like everyone else, we need to wait till the show airs to see how it came out." This is a big opportunity for a small local business. East Falls Glassworks opened its doors on January 7th. Designed by a group of glassblowing experts, the 2,100 sq.ft. studio facility not only produces work for sale, but also offers classes in glassblowing and studio rentals for local glass artists. According to Goldberg, "We are Philadelphia's largest and best-equipped public-access glassblowing studio. There is a large glassblowing community in Philadelphia and we exist to serve and foster that community. East Falls Glassworks is unmatched in the region as far as our capability and studio facilities are concerned.” Commissions have always been a part of East Falls Glassworks’ business, but the experience of working closely with the show’s designer was unique. The designer’s vision was turned into reality and something never before seen was created. The work created for the show is the most ambitious to emerge from East Falls Glassworks and was the result of an extraordinary effort from all involved. Pach says, "Murphy's Law was definitely in effect; we had problems with the glass-melting furnace over the weekend, and had to spend a few all-nighters to make this project a success. It was all worth it in the end." The first Saturday of every month, East Falls Glassworks holds an Open House. On May 6th, the Open House will be a celebration of the studio's involvement with “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. There will be demonstrations of work as seen on the show as well as demonstrations by guest artists from the local glassblowing community. East Falls Glassworks is located in Sherman Mills in East Falls, between Manayunk and Center City. Sherman Mills is a mixed-use community comprised of more than a quarter million square fee of space dedicated to supporting the arts and healthy living. “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. David Goldberg is the president of Endemol USA. The series is executive-produced by Tom Forman. The show airs Sundays (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET), on the ABC Television Network. | ||||||||||||
