Glass Studio and School
East Falls Glassworks is not only a glassblowing studio, but also a school offering evening and intensive
courses in many different glass working techniques. We get great enjoyment out of sharing our passion for
glass with students.
Glass is a fascinating material; the magical process of turning molten glass into art is now within
your reach. Our patient, experienced educators can teach you many different ways of forming glass,
including blowing, casting and solid-working. We offer a variety of courses and hopefully one of
our glass courses fits with your schedule.
We strive to make glass as accessible as more traditional art forms. If you've tried pottery, ceramics, painting,
or other mediums, there is no reason you can't work with hot glass as well. In fact, glass blowing has some
similarities to pottery, and potters in one of our classes might have a head start for some of the glassblowing skills.

This is an opportunity to experience hot glass; creation of a paperweight, ornament or vase will be demonstrated, and
then participants will be able to design and create one of their own. This is great way to try glass blowing.
Create a keepsake cast in hot glass from your own or your loved one's hand.
You can make beautiful ornamental eggs out of glass. No experience is necessary for the fun
spring-time workshop.
Several 'non-traditional' techniques of shaping and decorating glass will be explored in this class. Sculpting of solid glass will be explored, as will casting & blowing. We will also incorporate copper elements into the hot glass form. This class is a great way to get a feel for the material before committing to a multi week class or workshop.
There is more than one way to make a punty! Many different types of punties will be demonstrated;
how to make them and why you might need to make them, including but not limited to: hollow,
bar, sand, crown and hot pop punties. Introductory glassblowing experience required for this class.
Learn the ins and outs, do's and don'ts in the cold shop. We will discuss the proper use of our cold
shop equipment and what you can do with it. Workshop will cover cutting, grinding, polishing and
drilling.
Most of the material covered in the Introductory Glassblowing class compressed into two days of intensive
learning.
If you'd like to try working with hot glass for the first time or would like a refresher course, this is the
class for you. We start with an introduction to glassblowing tools and equipment as well as basic techniques.
Every week, a different form will be taught. Lots of exercises and hands-on time is provided
to build a solid foundation of glass blowing skills.
This class begins where the Introductory I class leaves off. After concluding this class, students should have
enough confidence and glass working skill to rent time and work with a partner. More advanced forms will be taught as well as some basic color techniques.
The Intermediate class is designed for glassblowing students who are comfortable with the basic forms as covered
in the Intro class (cup, long neck bottle and bowl). The Intermediate class will concentrate on building
hand skills and refining the forms. Attention will be paid to the wall thickness and proportion of the finished vessel. Many different color techniques will be taught. Some advanced bitwork will be covered as well,
including dropped feet.
This class will cover the basics of pulling cane and making vessels using the cane.
There is an additional $50 lab fee for the extensive amount of color needed for this technique.
Students will make plenty of cane to take home and incorporate into their own projects.
This class will explore in depth the technique of casting glass into plaster molds.
Glassblowing skills are not required, but glassblowers will benefit from the class as well.
Super-detailed molds will be made out of plaster-silica mixture and participants will be able
to immortalize their design in glass. All materials will be provided.
There are an almost infinite number of ways to color glass. This class will explore many different techniques,
potentially including color overlays, "french crackle", optic twists, basic and advanced cane work, incalmo and many others.
Because of the amount of materials (color) needed for the class, there will be an additional $50 lab fee for color
bar, frits and powders. If students have any special requests for certain colors or techniques, we will accomodate;
rotating teachers will cover a different technique each week. Be sure to bring your sketch book!
