On August 2, 2006, Philadelphia Magazine
held their annual "Best of Philly" shindig at Sherman Mills. This
party is a huge event, attended by upwards of 700 people, including the winners of the
prestigious Philadelphia Magazine "Best of Philly 2006" awards. The Sherman Mills Arts Council was invited to participate and contacted the arts community at the Mills.
Since the party was to be limited to the Sherman Mills event space and the courtyard,
East Falls Glassworks offered to bring live glass blowing into the courtyard. Since our
furnace is permanently installed in the studio, we asked Carl Potts, from the
Hot Glass Works,
to bring parts of his mobile glassblowing studio to Sherman Mills for the event.
A bunch of other artists from Sherman Mills participated as well; there were pottery
and wax sculpting demos as well as some really nice work made by Sherman Mills artists.
Mobile Glassblowing Studio
The theme of the "Best of Philly" party was safari. The weather cooperated, providing
record temperatures around 100 degrees. The East Falls Glassworks crew wore our special
EFG t-shirts and safari hats. The outdoor band bailed, but the Sherman Mills Arts Council
participants remained, and East Falls Glassworks did live glassblowing demonstrations in
the courtyard from around 6:00 until close to 10:00. We finally packed it in when it
got a bit too dark.
The last two pictures in this series are of the process of draining the glass from the
furnace after the event. This was pretty interesting and something that I've not seen
before.
Glassblowing at Your Event
If you have any sort of special event and would like to include live glass blowing as part
of the festivities, please let us know. Even if we can't help, we may be able to put you
in contact with folks like Carl who can.
